Dataset description

The official travel department, under the authority of the Directorate-General of the National Police, takes care of security measures around foreign personalities during their official trips or private stays. Archive records produced as part of these missions are kept in the National Archives. The various detailed inventories made it possible to draw up a structured and detailed chronological list of official travel by foreign personalities between 1944 and 1999. This list of more than 540 trips to France, which does not claim to be exhaustive, concerns only the executives in office. Only the so-called “official” trips were retained — as far as possible. Therefore, there are neither occasional crossings in France (country of transit to the American continent or Great Britain), nor stays on a private basis. Some foreign leaders (e.g. Léopold Sédar Senghor) stayed in France for several months, alternating private travel and official visits: in these cases there is only one “official travel” entry per year. The dataset made available shall consist of the following information: * Country of origin of the individual; * Country code; * Status: head of State, Head of Government, Sovereign of State and Religious Leader; * Individual; * Initial content: record in the archive inventory; * Official travel start year; * Official travel start date; * Date of the end of the official journey; * URL of the National Archives notice; * File ID. Map access is offered here, based on the _country code column._ Archival records of the Official Travel Service available at the National Archives generally consist of the following documents: detailed travel schedule (sometimes printed brochure), order of official cars, map of tables, safety notes and correspondence, press clippings. The data will be updated during subsequent filings by the Official Travel Service.
