The Mh project is a research and development project whose objectives are (i) to prioritise the determinants of nitrogen mineralisation of soil humified organic matter (MOS) (climate, soil, cultivation practices), and (ii) to improve the prediction of nitrogen mineralisation of MOS in fertilisation reasoning tools.
This research and development project is part of the recovery of water quality in Brittany, and is funded by the Agence de l’Eau Loire Bretagne (AELB), the Conseil Régional de Bretagne, the Conseils Generalaux du Finistère, Côtes d’Armor and Morbihan and DRAAF. The programme is coordinated by AELB, its project management by the Chambre Régionale d’Agriculture de Bretagne (CRAB), and its scientific conduct by INRA UMR SAS.
The project is based on a network of 141 plots spread throughout Brittany, and has been monitored for 5 years, from 2010 to the end of 2014. Mineralisation was quantified by measuring the nitrogen balance components of a non-fertilised maize crop (yield and N absorbed by the crop, amounts of soil mineral N in spring and fall, estimated leaching by model approach (STICS)). An important soil database has been established to explain the variability of mineralisation, with physical, chemical, biological and infrared spectroscopy measurements.
