Dataset description

Underground quarries are ancient underground construction stone mining works. They can pose serious threats to people and property, due to a risk of collapse. Very numerous in Gironde, underground quarries are mainly located in Entre-Deux-Mers, Bourgeais, Cubzacais, Fronsadais, Libournais and Sauternais. To date, nearly 1,400 underground quarries have been recorded in the department yet most are abandoned or ruined. The Directorate of Infrastructure is responsible for the security of the departmental roads under which these former underground quarries are located. 110 sections of departmental roads are concerned for a total distance of 25 km. The map data of this site is intended to document you on the underground quarries of the Department of Gironde. They are provided in the light of current knowledge and may be approximate. They therefore have no legal value and the Department of Gironde cannot be held responsible for any use that may be made of it. In case of an urban planning project, you must get closer to the municipality where your project is located in order to know the servitudes of public utility and the urban planning document that apply to it. The areas of predictable field movement known as “collapse risk zones” come from various studies (Risk Prevention Plan Land Movement or other) for which the state is responsible. For more details about these areas and in particular their regulations, you need to get closer to your municipality or the DDTM (Departmental Directorate of Territories and Sea).
