The underground quarries of the Gironde

Underground quarries are ancient underground construction stone mining works. They can pose serious threats to people and property, due to a risk of collapse. Very numerous in Gironde, underground quarries are mainly located in Entre-Deux-Mers, Bourgeais, Cubzacais, Fronsadais, Libournais and Sauternais. To date, nearly 1,400 underground quarries have been recorded in the department yet most are abandoned or ruined. The Directorate of Infrastructure is responsible for the security of the departmental roads under which these former underground quarries are located. 110 sections of departmental roads are concerned for a total distance of 25 km. The map data of this site is intended to document you on the underground quarries of the Department of Gironde. They are provided in the light of current knowledge and may be approximate.
