Dataset description

Biosphere areas are areas to be protected and developed in a uniform manner that: 1. are large-scale and characteristic of certain cultural landscapes with rich natural features, 2. meet in essential parts the requirements of a nature reserve, moreover predominantly of a landscape conservation area, Serve primarily the conservation, development or restoration of a landscape characterised by manifold uses and the diversity of species and biotope that has grown therein, including wild and previous forms of culture of economically used or usable animal and plant species; 4. serve exemplary the development and testing of economic practices which are particularly gentle on natural goods; and 5. environmental education and education, ecological research and long-term environmental monitoring. The biosphere areas are declared by statutory ordinance (NatSchG § 28) and must be divided and developed into core, nursing and development zones, taking into account the exceptions offered by the spaciousness and settlement. Core zones, such as nature reserves, the other zones are predominantly protected as landscape protected areas. In Baden-Württemberg, two biosphere areas are designated with the Swabian Alb biosphere area and the Black Forest biosphere area. The Swabian Alb biosphere area has been designated as a biosphere area under state law since 22.03.2008. UNESCO recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009. The Black Forest biosphere area has been designated as a biosphere area under state law since 01.02.2016. UNESCO recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2017.
