Dataset description

The data series contains datasets of forest areas (calcification areas) in the Free State of Saxony which have been limed since 1986 as part of soil protection limestone. The amount of natural lime applied in tonnes per hectare, the date of calcification and the type of forest ownership (Landeswald, private forest, etc.) are given per calcification area. Soil protection limestone has been carried out annually in Saxony since 1986 in order to compensate for the deep acidification of forest soils and to prevent forest damage. On the basis of soil analyses and the forest conditions, the amount of lime per calcification area is determined and natural lime is applied by plane or helicopter between 1 July and 31 October. The data form the basis for the digital limescale map for Saxony. Further information can be found in the leaflet on soil protection calcification, which is published by the state enterprise Sachsenforst.
