Dataset description

The engineering geological overview map of Lower Saxony 1: 500 000 is from the Geological Overview Map 1: 500 000 derived and shows the geological subsurface in general up to 2 m below ground, highlighting the properties that are important for the assessment as a building ground. From this point of view, the near-surface geology is summarised in 17 so-called building ground types for a better overview. Each type of ground is described by stratigraphy, petrography and genesis. From this information is assigned to the soil groups according to DIN 18196 and to the soil classes according to DIN 18300. The soil groups characterise soils according to similar material properties and the soil classes summarise soils from the point of view of viability and the state of loosening. The card scale 1: 500 000 makes it possible to obtain initial information about the near-surface ground conditions in a given room. In the context of regional planning and spatial planning and/or infrastructure planning, such as routes for transport routes, a quick overview of the building ground in the planning area can be gained. The card therefore does not replace building ground tests according to DIN 4020. For more detailed information is the engineering geological map in scale 1: 50,000 available. Information beyond 2 m depth is provided by the Lower Saxony Drill Database and the LBEG Geoarchive. Notes on the consideration of groundwater conditions for building foundations: In addition to the geological conditions or the building ground condition, local groundwater conditions are important for a planned construction project.
