Dataset description
The data set contains the natural forest cells (natural reserves) in the Free State of Saxony. Natural forest cells (NWZ) are forest areas left to their natural development. They are protected forest according to the Saxon Forest Act (SächsWaldG) with the aim of safeguarding the natural development of flora and fauna at a development stage close to natural vegetation. Natural forest cells primarily serve the research of self-developing forest communities, their soils, their vegetation, forest structure and fauna. They thus offer versatile approaches to the analysis of processes in forests and can be the basis for near-natural forest management or indicator of large-scale (anthropogenic) changes in relatively near-natural forest ecosystems. The geographical name of the natural forest cell is listed for each area. The data is used for the forest function map 1:25,000 of Saxony. Further information can be found in the brochure on forest function mapping published by the state enterprise Sachsenforst.
