Dataset description

The geological overview map (GÜK200) provides detailed information on the stratigraphy, petrography and genesis of the presented geological units. The revised GÜK200 shows surface geology on the mainland in up to two overlays. The low-powered floor is not represented. In the marine area, only the petrography of the recent seabed, which covers the top 20 cm of the seabed is depicted. In line with the original GÜK200 chart sheets, the seabed is stratigraphically addressed as a recent seabed. The entire map area is dominated by quaternary formations, distinguishing between pleistocene and holocene deposits. The pleistocene deposits are dominated by the glacial deposits of the Elster, Saale and Vistula cold periods, with glacial basin diments, loam of the base moraines and glazifluviatils, fluviatile and eolian deposits. After the end of the icing, the Holocene with rising sea level dominates the various marine facies, sediments of the transition area land/sea and on land mainly the low and high bogs. Excavations of older geological units are tied to the dynamics of the Zechstein salts in the underground and only occasionally appear in the map area, such as the well-known red Buntsandstein cliffs of Helgoland.
