Dataset description

Persistent rainfall has led to severe floods in many parts of Germany in recent days. The local forces are supported by the Federal Police, the Bundeswehr and the Technical Relief Agency. In Magdeburg, the Elbe reached a peak of 7.48 meters on Sunday morning and has since slowly declined. However, there is still a risk that softened dams could break, especially since a critical water level of over 7 meters is expected for several days. Due to flood risk, 23,000 people have been evacuated from the districts on the southern outskirts of the city to Berlin’s Chaussee. This map shows the observed water expansion in and around Magdeburg on June 9th (19:01 CET) derived from a TerraSAR-X scene with a spatial resolution of 8.25 meters. The water level at the time of recording was 7.37 meters. RapidEye data with a spatial resolution of 5 meters serves as a background image. The map also shows the location of the substation in the flooded Stadteil Rothensee, which is currently secured by 1,500 Bundeswehr soldiers against the floods to ensure the power supply of 30,000 people. Please note that the flood situation in urban areas, under vegetation cover and in areas with high gradients may not be fully detected due to radar geometry.
