Dataset description

The flood marks document water levels of actually expired flood events and provide essential information to equate hydraulic modelling to actual events. For a long time, they were the only way to document expired flood events and their impact on populated river floodplains and pass on these experiences to descendants. The oldest flood mark at Neckar is located near Neckarsteinach and dates back to 1524. This historical information is now used by hydrologists and hydraulicians to equate their mathematical models based on past flood events. They are also used in the determination of extreme floods.
