Dataset description

The earthquake catalogue Baden-Württemberg, processed by the State Earthquake Service (LED), contains information about earthquakes in and around Baden-Württemberg. The map shows natural (tectonic) and induced earthquakes in the area 47.3°N to 50.0°N and 7.2°E to 10.75°E since 1994. Since 1996, the catalogue is completely stronger for earthquakes than magnitude ML = 2.0 (judge scale). With the expansion of the measuring network and the increased sensitivity, it can now be assumed that it is complete at least from magnitude ML=1.5 in the processed area. The term “induced earthquakes” summarises non-natural seismic events. These include, for example, mountain hits, i.e. earthquakes in the area of active or open pit buildings. Further induced earthquakes are related to the extraction of raw materials from drilling, i.e. oil, natural gas or geothermal heat production or the pressing of liquids or gases into the subsurface. Quarry explosions are not included in the catalogue. “Featured” are those earthquakes that can be assigned a maximum intensity (not to be confused with the magnitude) on the European macroseismic scale (EMS-98, previously also other scales) of at least III. Especially in the early years of the compilation, earthquakes are also depicted, which have been processed by agencies other than the LED. The corresponding source (responsible agency) is listed in each case. For epicentres outside the territory of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, the information provided by the LED or the EDSW is not relevant. The relevant information is published by the local earthquake service.
