Dataset description

The update of the Monitoring for Social Urban Development presented here analyses socio-structural data for the observation period 1.1.2003 to 31.12.2004. The spatial observation level, as in the previous report, is the level of the 338 traffic cells of the state of Berlin. The methodology is also in line with the previous report: Cluster analysis identifies “areas of similar development” which are subdivided into the categories “problematic/average/positive”. The cluster analysis is based on data on 17 indicators in the areas of mobility and selective migration, demographic situation, unemployment and social assistance. In addition to these 17 indicators, a further 28 complementary features (e.g. educational participation and student structure) will be evaluated. The data on indicators and supplementary characteristics are presented in tables and maps in the Annex. In the result of the 2006 cluster analysis, as in the 2004 cluster analysis, a total of 10 different territorial types of similar development trends were identified: In four site types, the results indicate problematic social development (category ‘A’), two types show an average development (category ‘B’) and in four site types the positive characteristics (category ‘C’) predominate. As in the past, the western inner-city areas are the most problematic types of areas in Berlin. On the eastern outskirts of the city, negative trends have stabilised and expanded in the large settlement areas. The same is true for the areas in settlements and large settlements of social housing in the western periphery of Berlin. The eastern inner-city areas, on the other hand, have further stabilised.
