Potential areas for hydrogen storage in Schleswig-Holstein

The distribution of salinar rocks within the saltstock boundary for the installation of hydrogen/natural gas storage caverns and the maximum acceptable depth of the salt canopy is shown. Due to their structural development, the salt sticks are internally complex — from the salt rocks of the Zechstone and the Rotlieged — as double salinars and have overhangs in their flank areas. The depth of the salt canopy roof (top of the Zechstone and Rotlieged deposits) up to 1 300 m u. NHN served as a maximum acceptable depth (current level of knowledge) for the delimitation of detectable horizons for the storage of hydrogen or natural gas. From drilling results it can be inferred that locally due to the formation of powerful hat rocks, the sol-capable rock can also lie deeper than 1 300 m below NHN within the designated areas. The use of the flank areas will not be possible due to the expected, differently formed overhangs.
