Wetlands such as floodplains, moors, lakes or mountain rivers with their spring areas are valuable habitats for a variety of animals and plants. They play an important role as a food source and groundwater reservoir — also for humans. Wetlands contribute, among other things, to the quality of the food water and serve as natural water reservoirs and retention rooms for floods.
The Ramsar Convention is an international convention for the protection of wetlands of international importance, in particular as a habitat for wading and aquatic birds. The Convention is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, in which negotiations on the agreement took place in 1971. It is one of the oldest and most important global conservation agreements.
