Roads — Measures in Greater Hamburg

Cross-border construction site coordination Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg The preservation of the infrastructure is of fundamental importance for the development in the greater Hamburg area. Therefore, construction sites in the road area are part of the normal picture — the suffering of residents and road users. In many cases, however, it is not work on the road itself that leads to disabilities, but the many supply and disposal lines in the road body or the construction projects of private individuals. Approximately 25,000 jobs per year in the Hamburg road network, of which more than 3,700 on the major main roads, therefore require careful coordination to minimise obstacles to traffic flow. This is the task of the Management Unit “Transport Flow Improvement” in the state operation Roads, Bridges and Waters. Here, the incoming information of all road construction services, management companies and private builders is collected and evaluated. The information processed in this way will be published for the most important construction sites in the greater Hamburg area. In the field of site coordination, the aim is to prevent simultaneous construction sites, e.g. on important parallel roads, so that uninterrupted alternative routes are available to traffic. However, such a good coordination of course cannot absolutely prevent congestion. The Hamburg road network is partly busy and overloaded in the morning, as in the evening rush hour. In order to achieve sustainable, cross-border site coordination between the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg, construction site data are exchanged and coordinated together.
