The soil-based moisture level is an indicator for the assessment of the habitat for natural plants(s) and is assessed by means of soil water balances. These are mainly controlled by water retention capacity, groundwater connection, precipitation and evapotranspiration. Sites with very low (dry) or very high (wet) moisture levels can usually only be used agriculturally with a high effort and are therefore often of particular interest as extreme sites for nature conservation.
The soil-based moisture level assesses a natural soil function according to § 2(2) BBodSchG, according to point 1.a) the livelihood and habitat for humans, animals, plants and soil organisms. The criterion chosen for this purpose is the location potential for natural plant societies with the characteristic value of soil-based moisture level.
