WMS Landscapes

WMS Landschaften is a representation service for landscape names in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. Landscape names are popular names whose origin may be of a nature-related, historical, economic or other nature. Landscapes are understood here as a bordered or boundary larger or smaller section of the Earth’s surface with its own name. Unlike political entities (e.g. municipality, district), whose boundaries are clearly and legally defined by official surveying, there are usually no precise limits for landscapes, but only blurred, legally undefined limits. Based on the landscapes processed by the Standing Committee on Geographical Names (StAGN), the Federal Geoinformation and Geodesy Service Centre has developed a map service for landscape names. In most cases, the demarcations can only be regarded as border hems in which the affiliation of individual areas to a particular landscape cannot be deduced bindingly.
