Characterisation of Saxon cultural landscapes by historical cultural landscape elements

The state area of Saxony can be divided into 17 cultural landscapes using 40 landmark cultural-historical relics. To define the cultural landscapes, a schematic method has been developed in order to better compare and reproduce the results (cf. WALZ et al. 2012). It combines methods of spatial intersection of spatial data, descriptive statistics and spatial and hierarchical clustering. The division into the cultural landscapes is determined by priority occurrences and combination of the individual landscape element types. The Saxon cultural landscape is characterised to varying degrees by relics of historical cultural landscape elements. In order to determine how strongly the Saxon cultural landscapes are characterised by historical cultural landscape elements, the index of weighted embossing was developed (cf.
