Dataset description

The so-called “Stolpersteine” date back to a project by artist Gunter Demnig. They are meant to remind people who were persecuted during the period of National Socialism. These include Jews, political and ecclesiastical resistance fighters, Sinti and Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, people with disabilities or even people stigmatised as so-called “social” or “professional criminals”. The stumbling stones have been installed in Germany (and beyond) since 1992 as small brass plates according to a uniform pattern before the last freely chosen place of residence of the persecuted. There are now more than 75,000 stumbling stones. There are over 300 such stones in Duisburg. New stones are constantly being added; the lead for the laying of new stones is at the Jugendring Duisburg (www.jugendring-duisburg.de). On the basis of two publications by the Evangelical Church Circle of Duisburg (https://kirche-duisburg.de/inhalt/download/), which previously accompanied the stumbling stone laying, a comprehensive documentation of the Duisburg Stolpersteine (http://www.diss-duisburg.de/online-bibliothek/bucher-im-volltext/broschuere-ueber-die-duisburger-stolpersteine/) was created by Martin Dietzsch at the Duisburg Institute for Language and Social Research (DISS) in 2019. This documentation forms the basis for the present mapping in the Historical GeoPortal. The data is continuously supplemented and updated by the Center for Remembrance Culture (https://www.duisburg.de/erinnerungskultur) at irregular intervals.
