Dataset description

The data set contains the datasets provided by d:kult for the culture hackathon “Coding da Vinci Nieder.Rhein.Land 2021”, which takes place from 11 September to 6 November in the Rhineland and Lower Rhine regions. D:kult is the Digital Art and Culture Archive Düsseldorf. The aim of this joint project of the museums, cultural institutes and foundations of the state capital Düsseldorf is to digitally document, manage the Düsseldorf collections and to make the entire diversity of the natural and cultural heritage preserved in their collections available online to the public via d:kult. Coding da Vinci is the first German hackathon for open cultural data. Since 2014, Coding da Vinci has been connecting technology-savvy and culture-loving communities with German cultural institutions to further develop the creative potential in our digital cultural heritage. Coding da Vinci — The Kultur-Hackathon is funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation as a joint project of the German Digital Library, the Research and Competence Center Digitisation Berlin (digiS), the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany and Wikimedia Deutschland. In addition to Open Data Düsseldorf, the Cultural Office of the state capital and the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, the organisers of the hackathons across the Rhineland and Lower Rhine are the City of Moers, the Museum Service Cologne, as well as the OK Labs in Cologne and Düsseldorf. At the kick-off event on 11 and 12 September 2021, 27 cultural institutions from the two regions will present a selection of their cultural treasures digitally as open data and under free licenses. In the subsequent multi-week sprint phase, teams of participating hackers develop prototypes for e.g. apps, websites, data visualisations, games or interactive installations that show innovative and inspiring ways of how digitised collection objects can be conveyed and used in new ways. In the virtual closing event at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf on 6 November 2021, the individual teams will present their developments to the public. The best, most extraordinary, funny and technically sophisticated entries will be awarded. Afterwards, all teams have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship at Coding da Vinci with their project and to develop their prototypes further.
