Dataset description

The digital geological map of Bavaria 1:25,000 (dGK25) denotes the digital, nationwide, actively maintained dataset of the Geological Map of Bavaria 1:25,000. It thus represents the primary data base for the digital distribution of the GK25 on the various digital platforms, in particular the publication in the Environmental Atlas of Bavaria as a map service of the LfU. The status of the dGK25 may be more up-to-date compared to the state of the printed card sheet. Like the Geological Map of Bavaria, the dGK25 represents the geological construction of the Bavarian landscape in 1:25,000. The looser and fixed rocks on the terrain surface are reproduced in the map image (surface map). The map forms, among other things, a basis for assessing the soil formation, the building ground, the water flow, the spread of usable loosers and solid rocks, the possible range of environmental damage and the protective function of the subsurface. Depending on the level of processing of the map base used, an explanatory volume with earth and landscape history, rock description, stratigraphy and tectonics or recording reports are available per sheet. The basis of the dGK25 is data of different origins, i.e. from already published printed GK25 sheets, of preliminary unprinted GK25 with lower level of detail (vGK25) or data from digital manuscript cards. All card sheets are generally compliant, i.e. they are matched with the geological legend valid for the whole of Bavaria.
