The ecological status of a natural water is assessed in accordance with the EC Water Framework Directive on a five-stage scale (very good, good, moderate, unsatisfactory, poor). The classification is primarily based on the worst evaluation part result from the biological quality components phytoplankton, macrophytes/phytobenthos, macrozoobenthos and fish. The physico-chemical orientation values of the LAWA are supported. Hydromorphological components are also evaluated for the very good condition. Furthermore, the ecological status or potential is not assessed better than moderate if environmental quality standards for specific synthetic and non-synthetic pollutants are not complied with. Database modules for the WFD-relevant communities (phytoplankton, macrophytes/phytobenthos, zoobenthos and fish) are in development.
