Dataset description

Definition: Monthly expenditure for basic needs includes expenditure on: — Food, beverages and tobacco products, — Clothing and footwear, — Living, energy and residential maintenance (e.g. rent, ancillary costs, maintenance and repairs). Monthly expenditure on social participation includes expenditure on: — Transport (e.g. purchase of a motor vehicle, expenditure on fuels, vehicle repairs, public transport), — Communication (e.g. purchase of a mobile phone, fixed network expenditure, internet, mobile telephony), — Leisure, entertainment and culture (e.g. purchase of consumer electronics and digital media, toys, newspaper subscriptions, admission to cinemas, fees for extracurricular music or sports lessons), — Education (e.g. tutoring, childcare, examination fees), — Accommodation and restaurant services (e.g. restaurant visits, hotel accommodation) and for — other goods and services (e.g. hairdressing services, personal care products). In order to form income quintiles, households per household type are sorted according to the level of equivalised income and divided into five groups of equal size. The first Qunitil contains the 20 percent of households with the lowest, the fifth with the highest equivalised income. Data source: IT.NRW, Income and Consumer Sample (EVS)
