Project context: https://www.flowkar.io/ Problem There is consensus that the currently available spatial and temporal resolution of weather observation cannot meet the requirements of autonomous driving, but a significant expansion of the infrastructure-side measuring stations is not economic. However, an extension of the network, especially at neuralgic points, to close measurement gaps to secure traffic routes and protect the general public from weather-related hazards is highly desirable. Project objective The environmental sensors from the assistance systems of the vehicle portfolio of AUDI AG and other Group brands can record various environmental data. Since a variety of weather data can be determined or calculated in this system, these data may be suitable to fill gaps in weather observation and weather forecasts. Datasets In order to evaluate this potential, the project network uses laboratory experiments as well as real trips in selected regions of Germany to create a first data base with both established and novel sensors and evaluated according to meteorological quality standards. Here at mCloud, AUDI AG links selected records from measurement campaigns from its subproject. Measurement campaigns were carried out both stationary at the Ingolstadt plant as well as in cooperation with (reference) vehicles of the German Weather Service.
