Dataset description

The data base of the geological drilling includes the results of nearly 160,000 holes. The drilling results come from 150 years of geological exploration. The end of the deepest hole reaches 1,888 meters. However, most of the drilling data comes from drilling of hydrogeological and geotechnical explorations, which usually reach a depth of less than 100 meters. In recent times, many holes up to a maximum of 100 m for the use of near-surface geothermal energy are also graded. Drilling is required under the Deposit Act at the respective Land Geological Office and the Federal Mining Act (BBergG) from a final depth of more than 100 m to the competent mountain authority. In addition, they are subject to the obligation to notify in accordance with the Water Budget Act (WHG). Since the 1980s, the analog data of the drilling data on the location and depth, the so-called master and title data as well as a coding of the geological layer descriptions have been digitised. The drilling data is currently centrally managed in a database in GeODin format. The standardisation for the description and documentation of drilling data is based on the symbol key Geology (Landesamt für Mining, Energy and Geology, Hannover, 4th edition). The logical structuring of the data is defined in the SEP3 digestion type, which is also suitable for implementation in the data collection software of different manufacturers.
