Dataset description

The North German Lowlands with the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea are recorded on Blatt Neumünster. At Brunsbüttel, the North-Eastern Sea Canal and the Elbe flow into the North Sea. The morphology of the northern German lowlands is characterised by glacial influence. The glacial deposits of the Elster, Saale and Vistula cold periods include glacial basin diments, loam of the base moraines, fluviatile and glazifluviatile deposits as well as eolian sands. In the coastal area, the sediment distribution is dominated by holocene loose rocks of different facies: Sea floor, indoor and beach area as well as wattage and marching areas. In the river valleys of the Elbe, Eider, Oste and Sturgeon, the Brackish deposits of the Holocene reach far into the mainland. The eruptions of older sediment rocks are tied to the dynamics of the Zechstein salts in the underground. As a result of the rise of salt, the bulge of the superimposed (mesozoic and kenozoic) layers, tectonic ruptures and faults occurred. For example, upper chalk appears in the area south of Itzehoe under the quaternary top layer; Claystones of the red lying area are open southeast of Elmshorn. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, petrography and genesis of the depicted units, a geological section provides additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. The northwest-southeast profile cuts the salt sticks of Westerhever, Oldenswort, Heide, Süderhastedt, Krempe, Elmshorn and Quickborn and illustrates the dynamics of the Zechstein salts.
