Dataset description

Blatt Stralsund depicts the North German lowlands in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region, where in the northeast the Baltic coast is covered with Greifswalder Bodden, Oderhaff, Rügen and Usedom. The morphology of the northern German lowlands is characterised by glacial influence. As several glacial series of the Elster, Saale and Vistula cold periods overlap, the landscape is rich in shape. Glacial sediments of the Vistula Cold Age dominate the map section, distinguishing between the loam/mergel of the base moraine, glazifluviatile sands and gravel, glacial basin sludges as well as Aeolian flight and dune sands. Apart from sedimentation in the marine area, holocene deposits also occur in the sinks and river descents of the mainland, e.g. peat of the low and high bogs or Limnian sand, detritus and lime mudde. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, petrography and genesis of the represented units, an overlay scheme clearly summarises all surface-close superpositions. Two geological sections, both south-west-north-east, provide additional insights into the construction of the subsurface.
