Dataset description

Blatt Lingen depicts the North German lowlands in the border area between Germany and the Netherlands, with the Münstersche Kreidsenke in the southeast corner of the map section. The morphology of the northern German lowlands is characterised by glacial influence. The deposits of the Elster, Saale and Vistula Glacials include deposits of the final moraines, loam/mergel of the base moraines, fluviatile and glazifluviatile sands, glazilimnian basin clods as well as eolian formations such as loess and flying sands. The glacial relics are partly covered by holocene river sediments, moor or lake sediments. In the southeast corner of the map leaf is the Münster chalk basin, which is filled with up to 2 000 m thick sediment layers of the chalk. The hollow structure causes older rocks to bite out from the central part of the basin. The Campan in the Basin Centre is followed by outcrops of Santon, Coniac, Turon, Cenoman (Oberkreide) as well as Alb, Apt, Barreme, Hauterive and Valangin (lower chalk) on the edge of the basin. Overlays of quaternary looser sediments are also widely used in this area. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, a geological profile provides additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. The south-north section crosses the Münstersche Kreidesenke and the North German lowlands.
