Dataset description

The North German lowlands are recorded on both sides of the Elbe (Altmark, Fläming, Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide) — with the Flechtinger-Rosslauer-Scholle and the Subhercyn sink in the southwest. The morphology of the northern German lowlands is characterised by glacial glacial series (basic moraine, end moraine, sander, Urstromtal). The map covers the Saale-cold-time plateau of Altmark and Fläming, which crosses the area northwest-southeast. In addition, large-area overlays occur through Aeolian sands of the Vistula cold season. In the lowlands of Elbe and Havel as well as their tributaries, in addition to the fluviatile and glazifluviatile sands of the Pleistocene, holocene moor and auesediments are stored. In the southwest corner of the map sheet, in the vicinity of Magdeburg, some locally narrow breaks of older rocks (carbon to Triassic) protrude under the quaternary top layer. In Gommern, the oldest rocks of the map sheet are open (quartets of the lower carbon). In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, an overlay scheme clearly summarises all surface-close superpositions. Two geological cuts provide additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. A profile begins in the Subhercyn valley and crosses the Flechtingen-Roßlauer Scholle until Wittenberg demolition, the Altmark-Fläming-Senke and the Prignitz-Lausitz-Wall. The second section continues to the northwest, also crosses the Subherzyne sink and the Flechtingen-Roßlauer Scholle. The latter is separated from the Calvörder Scholle by the Haldensleben demolition before the Altmark sink begins at the Gardelegen-Wittenberger demolition.
