Dataset description

Leaf Cottbus depicts the northern German lowlands in the border area with Poland and covers parts of the Lusatian mountain country as its southern boundary. The Lower Lusatia is cut to the northwest, the Upper Lusatia in the southwest of the map sheet. Particularly striking here is the multitude of areas altered by day or mining, which are shown in the map as grey-checked areas. The morphology of the North German lowlands is characterised by ice ages, with in some cases several glacial series overlapping. The glacial sediments that dominate the map section include loam/mergel of the base moraine, deposits of the final moraine, fluviatile and glazifluviatile sands and gravel, as well as Aeolian flight and dune sands. The increasingly occurring deposits of the Vistula Cold Age on the northern edge of the map sheet are increasingly replaced by Saale- and Elster-glacial relics in the central and southern part, a fact that reflects the reduced penetration of recent ice advances. The Cenozoic top layer of the map sheet also includes the holocene deposits in the drainages and sinks (lazy sludge, lime mud, floodplain and moor sediments) as well as the regionally limited outbreaks of tertiary sediments (Pliocene/Miocene, partly with lignite fumes). On the southern edge of the map section, magmatites, metamorphites and sedimentites of the Lusatian mountain land come to light under the Cenozoic top layer. Here, the oldest rocks of the map leaf are open, the pre-Cambrian grey wackens of the Lusatian Anticlinal Zone. The Lusatian granodiorite massif, the largest plutonite area in the Varisque mountains of Central Europe, includes the occurrences of cadomic magmatites and anatexites (upper proterozoic to lower cambrium). The Biotite Monzogranite of the King’s Shark Mountains first intruded synvaristicly in the Upper Carbon. Tertiary volcanicism (nephelinite, olivine basalt) is occupied in the area around Baruth. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, petrography and genesis of the represented units, an overlay scheme vividly summarises all near-surface overlay cases. Two profile sections, both southwest-north-east-oriented, also provide insights into the geological construction of the subsurface. An overview map provides additional information on the regional geological structure of the area. Lausitzer Triasscholle, East Brandenburg and North Sudetic Cretaceous Mulde, Görlitzer Synklinorium and Lusitzer Block are distinguished here.
