Dataset description

The northern Oberrheingraben with its mesozoic flanks is depicted on Blatt Mannheim. The dominant building unit in the map section is the Oberrheingraben. It passes through the map sheet from south-southwest to north-northost and can be clearly distinguished by its edge faults. The tertiary sediment filling of the trench structure occurs only occasionally under the quaternary top layer of fluvitile deposits, loess and flight sands. Geomorphologically, the Oberrheingraben can be divided into two areas: the Vorderpfälzer Tiefland and the Rheinaue. The Vorderpfälzer Tiefland is an old Pleistocene river terrace, which is cut in the west-east direction by the floats of the Palatinate streams. The younger Rheinaue is deepened into this old Pleistocene river terrace and filled with holocene Auesediments. In the western part of the map section is the left Rhine Mesozoic, which extends between the base mountains of the Rhenish Schiefergebirge and the Vosges. Open-minded are the foothills of the Saar-Nahe-Senke, the Westricher plateau, the Palatinate Forest and the Zabern valley. To the east of the Upper Rhine moat are the Mesozoic layers (mainly Trias) of the Kraichgau-Senke. They extend south to the foothills of the North Black Forest (upper red). In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, a geological profile provides additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. The West-East section crosses the Westricher plateau, the Palatinate Forest and the Oberrheingraben.
