Dataset description

The mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the southern German strata-stage landscape dominate on Blatt Stuttgart-Süd. The Jura of the Swabian Alb crosses the map sheet from southwest to northeast and occupies the largest area. Due to their blue colour, the limestones, marl and clay stones stand out clearly from their surroundings. To the northwest, from the Albvorland over the Gäue to the North Black Forest, the layers continue in the outcrops of Keuper, musselkalk and Buntsandstein. In the lowlands and sinks, the mesozoic of the layer-level landscape is partly superimposed by Cenozoic sediments, such as Pleistocene loess, weathering clay, slope rubble or pliocene gravel of the Ur-Danube. The map sheet also covers the Urach-Kirchheim volcanic area with its volcanic vents. It is a special feature between the surrounding sedimentary rocks. An intensified magmatism in the tertiary caused the intrusion of basalts and basalt bushes. To the southeast, the mesozoic rocks of the strata landscape submerge among the molasses sediments of the Alpine foothills. The Molasse basin, the debris of the Alps, is filled with tertiary deposits of freshwater, brackish water and sea molasses. These are extensively superimposed by pleistocene top layers, e.g. by bulkheads of meltwater flows or loess and loess clay. In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, a geological section provides additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. The northwest-southeast profile begins in the North Black Forest and crosses the Upper Gäu, Schönbuch, Albvorland, the Swabian Alb and the Molasse Basin of the Alpine Foreland. A structural geological map with registered fault lines, earthquake zones, epicentres and the tertiary volcanic area between Bad Urach and Kirchheim illustrates the endogenous activities in the underground.
