Dataset description

The city plans go back to the 18th century. Since Duisburg has only existed since 1975 with the integration of the left side of the Rhine and Walsum in its present form, the maps are not always available for the entire city area. If the city plans of the then independent districts (Rheinhausen, Homberg, Hamborn, Duisburg, etc.) are available in close time periods, the maps were interlaced. This is an attempt to achieve a comprehensive picture of today’s urban area, even in older periods. In cooperation with the City Archives, the historical map content is continuously being expanded, so that we always get a bit closer to this goal. Since city maps and other municipal maps are so-called “thematic maps”, which have been issued on different scales, an exact presentation of the location (e.g. a building) is not possible. Furthermore, the historical map material may have different accuracy within the map image. This is especially true for the mapping of map areas outside the respective municipal boundary. An overview of all combined and individual vintages can be found in the PDF file “Historical Map Overview City Map”. The preset section of the city plans, which can be accessed via the ‘Go to resource’ button, is only a small area of the available data. By adjusting the Bounding Box (Parameter BBOX in the URL), the displayed section can be adjusted. The Historical GEO Portal can be accessed here: Historical GEO Portal
