The sports plaque of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is the highest sport-related award in the country and was awarded for the first time in 1959. Since then, it has been awarded annually in recognition of the outstanding voluntary commitment or in recognition of an exceptionally successful sporting career. In total, the sports badge was awarded to more than 900 wearers.
