Dataset description

The map layer §42-Biotope can be selected in the Web Map Service Landscape Information Collection (WMS LINFOS) and shows the spatial location of the legally protected biotopes in North Rhine-Westphalia according to § 42 Landesnaturschutzgesetz NRW. Protected biotopes are endangered habitats that are subject to a flat-rate legal protection (§ 30 BNatSchG and § 42 LNatSchG NRW). All measures or actions leading to the destruction or a significant or lasting impairment of the biotopes are prohibited. The protection is valid by law, i.e. without the need for a protected area identification or mapping of the biotopes. The mapping of the biotopes by the LANUV and the notification of landowners by the Lower Landscape Authority have a purely declaratory character. In NRW, the following biotopes are protected by law: 1. Natural or near nature unobstructed areas of flowing and standing inland waters, including their shores and associated natural or near-natural vegetation, as well as their natural or near-natural landing areas, old arms and regularly flooded areas, 2. Bogs, marshes, ridges, wet meadows rich in vine and bins, spring areas, inland salt sites, 3. Open inland dunes, natural rock formations, open natural boulders, debris and boulders, clay and loess walls, dwarf shrub, ginster and juniper heaths, bristled grass grass, species-rich lean meadows and pastures, dry grassland, natural heavy metal grassland, forests and bushes of dry warm sites, 4. Breakage, swamp and swamp forests, canyon, log heap and slope forests. The legally protected biotopes are recorded in NRW as part of biotope mapping and documented in a nationwide database. The data are available to third parties via the specialist information system “Legally protected biotopes in NRW” on the LANUV website.
