In accordance with §24 of the BNatSchG, national parks are legally binding areas to be protected, which are large-scale, largely uncirculated and of particular character and fulfil the requirements of a nature reserve in a majority of their territory. National parks aim to ensure, in most of their territory, the most undisturbed course of natural processes in their natural dynamics. As far as the purpose of the protection allows, national parks should also serve the scientific environmental observation, the education of nature and the experience of nature of the population. National parks must be protected, taking into account their special purpose of protection, as well as the exceptions offered by spaciousness and settlement, such as nature reserves.
