Dataset description

Between Herongen and Viersen, as well as in the neighbouring Schwalm-Nette area, the quaternary strata consists mainly of the 2.6-0.5 million-year-old sub- and medium-pleistocene deposits. They are assigned to the Lower Rhine-Main Terrace Formation of the Rhine-Maas System. Between the two deposit areas of Rhine and Maas runs the Viersener Sprung, which separates the crefeld plaice in the east from the Venlo plaice in the west. As a result of the different tectonic movements, not only is the altitude different, but the width of the terrace sequences varies greatly between the two areas. Powerful profiles on the Venlo plaice face low-density profiles on the Krefeld plaice, which are difficult to parallelise with each other. Investigations of boulder stock, heavy minerals and the number of flints on digestions and drilling profiles brought new findings. In the Schwalm-Nette area there is a more or less complete sequence of the Lower Rhine-Main terrace formation from the older to the younger main terraces. In addition, the sands and gravel present in the plateau area of the Süchtelner mountain range at the altitude of + 80 to + 85 m NHN are to be classified as deposits of the Tegelen layers.
