Dataset description

The statisticians of the city of Münster have calculated new population indicators on the topic of “living time”, which are now available in this dataset for Münster, the six districts and the 45 districts and are also prepared in a gender-differentiated manner. When considering the living period, the length of stay at the current address is examined. This means that the entire period of residence in the city of Münster can be higher than at the current address due to removals in the city area. The evaluation focuses on the resident population aged 18 and more, as the place of residence and the duration of residence are determined by the parents in childhood. The duration of the residence at the address gives indications of the connection and identification of the residents with their living environment, but at the same time also the choice of the place of residence depending on the individual stages of life. This is particularly evident in the life phase of education and study and the associated mobility. Thus, when interpreting the values, consideration must also be given to the existence of social infrastructure in the districts. If, for example, a large number of student dormitories are present in a quarter, a shorter living period is often due to this. The temporal development of the values for a period of up to one year can also reflect larger residential construction projects and their initial occupation. With regard to the calculated values, the total city of Münster shows an average period of residence of the resident population aged 18 and more of 12.94 years at the end of 2019. It has hardly changed in retrospect over the past five years. However, there are big differences when looking at the district level. Here, the values vary from almost 6 years of living in the station district to almost 21 years in Hiltrup-Ost. In the district of Mitte, the average length of residence of adults is 10.66 years, while in the suburban districts it is above the urban average. In retrospect of the last five years, districts with a long living period include Hiltrup-Ost as well as Nienberge (19.31 years), Sprakel (18.58 years), Gelmer-Dyckburg (17.43 years) and Wolbeck (16.83 years). The districts of Neutor with 6.42 years, harbour (7.39 years) or Buddenturm (7.66 years) are characterised by a short living period. If the focus is placed on the population of Münster and here in particular on the so-called ‘old meals’, more than one in five adults live at the current address for 20 years or longer at the end of 2019, while on the other hand it is 13.19 percent of the resident population who do not yet live there a whole year.
