Soil erosion by wind occurs mainly on sandy, humus-poor and organic soils. Wind exposed areas without vegetation are particularly endangered. The map on potential wind erosion hazards in Germany shows regional focus on the risk of soil removal from wind. The characteristic value is determined by the soil type, the soil humus content and the average annual wind speed at a height of 10 meters. Special attention is also paid to agricultural moor soils as well as deep and sand mixing crops. The method has been published in DIN 19706:2013 and included in the methodology documentation of the ad hoc-AG soil. For the application to soil maps, the procedure was adapted by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials (BGR). The map shows the risk of erosion for arable soils in Germany on the basis of the use-differentiated soil overview map on a scale of 1:1,000,000 and the average annual wind speed at 10 meters altitude for the climate period 1980-2000 (DWD). In principle, however, only in the case of arable use and a low soil cover by the crop can be assumed to be a real threat. The map shows a potential hazard situation without taking into account wind hazards and crops.
