Dataset description

With regional statistical spatial typology (RegioStar), the BMVI has designed a settlement structural spatial typology because existing spatial typologies were unable to meet the requirements of transport and mobility research and policy; however, it is equally well suited for questions of other disciplines. With the support of the BBSR, the types were empirically determined at the level of the municipalities or association communities/community associations. RegioStar enables local and regional considerations through the hierarchical structure. In the design, important requirements were taken into account for scientific analysis and political interpretation: > nationally comparable definition of the central local function of cities, > Time stability of the types in order to be able to map temporal developments, > a population distribution suitable for sample surveys. The typology ranges from a “region type” distinct in urban and rural regions, over a “differentiated region type” in four types ultimately into 17 “regional statistical spatial types”. These 17 spatial types form the core of regional statistical spatial typology and form the basis for further summaries in spatial and community types. Administrative reforms change the number and cuts of municipalities. Here, the reference data for different area levels are available (from the 2015 level). Every year in November/December an update is made to the state as at 31.12. of the previous year. The reference files are also stored in the Federal Statistical Office and can be used there for (special) evaluations in all statistical areas.
