Dataset description

Definition: “Surface sedimentology” means the physical properties of the top 10 to 20 cm of the sole of a body of water present by grain size, distribution and storage. Waters in this context are seas, rivers or closed inland waters. As part of the SMMS project, surface sedimentological data sets are those representing surface sedimentology in the German Bay, including the estuaries of the Ems, Weser and Elbe estuaries. Through morphological activities of the water soil, such a surface sedimentological model is only valid for a certain period or time. Data generation: The basis for surface sedimentological products are gridded time-variant surface sedimentological models, which are created using the functional soil model, a data-based hindcast simulation model, via spatial-temporal interpolation and specially developed sedimentological extrapolation methods based on sea and land surveys of various data types as well as surface sedimentological sampling. For the years 1960-2020, a gridded surface sedimentological model with additional bathymetric information in 10 m resolution for the German Bay will be created. Product: A tiled 10 m grid of the German Bay valid on 01.07. for the year, wherein the Phi quarter discrete modeled total line of the surface as well as the height distribution is stored at each grid node. The product is provided in CSV format together with analytical products produced from this surface sedimentological product. The analysis products include 10 m of dissolved GeoTIFFs of the proportions of individual grain fractions according to DIN EN ISO 14688, the median grain diameter d50, sorting, skew and porosity as well as for the years 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 petrographic maps in shape format, which represent the grain distribution in linguistic descriptions according to Figge, Folk and the SEP3/ISO format (separated into main and secondary components). For each year, source maps are available in shapefile format, which represent the positions and spatial influences of the surface sediment samples measured in the year.
