Small commemorative plaques, so-called stumbling stones, are spread over the city of Cologne. These small memorials are precisely placed in the places where people lived before their escape or arrest by the terror of National Socialism. They remind us of deported and murdered Cologne Jews, Sinti and Roma, politically persecuted, homosexuals, forced labourers, Jehovah’s Witnesses and victims of “euthanasia”.
Since 1990, Gunter Demnig has developed the project and meanwhile around 2,300 stumbling stones have been laid throughout Cologne’s city area. About the hashtag #GlanzstattHetze we look forward to your pictures and stories of shiny stumbling stones. With this action we bring splendor instead of hate speech to our city.
