Dataset description

The environmental data provided here captures the state of the atmosphere (fall, relative humidity, wind, etc.) and the roadway (road surface temperature, water film thickness, etc.) on the test field A4 of the BASt. The selection of sensors primarily refers to the application in road operation (especially smoothness forecast for winter service) and for traffic influence. Further use would be conceivable in conjunction with fleet data for the friction value prediction in connection with automated driving. The test field is used for the direct evaluation of the sensors or by comparing measurement data with each other for the validation of laboratory testing procedures. Where no laboratory tests are possible so far, comparisons with statements of measurement uncertainties are used. Statements on the accuracy of the sensors on the test field and the state of the applied test methods can be found in the report “New sensors for road weather stations”. Report: New sensors for road weather stations (OPUS) The data is provided as minute values in two formats: Untreated data (raw data) as provided by the sensor manufacturers. With them, the measurement uncertainties of the sensors can be derived. In addition, traffic data in the form of traffic strength and speed are provided separately by lanes and class (cars and trucks) for analysis. The data is updated daily. Data from five compiled road weather stations (SWS) with plausibilised readings. Plausibility is carried out according to the rules of the FGSV note paper H PEB SWIS. The data of these stations are made available to the DWD for predictions under the SWIS Info road condition and weather information system. The forecasts can be viewed there with appropriate access authorisation. The data is updated daily. Dataset description: Information on Open Data Data Format (PDF) Note: The sensors are regularly maintained by the manufacturers. There is no constant control by the BASt. High measurement tolerances or sensor errors can only be assessed by means of the plausibility checks shown or on the basis of photos. No sensor currently serves as a reference for a parameter. In addition to manufacturing-related measurement tolerances, differences between the measured values for a parameter can also have the design or position of a sensor in the test field as a cause. The latter refers only to the parameters of the roadway. Here, the position of the sensor in the roadway cross-section must be taken into account. In the longitudinal direction of a cross-section, no significant differences could be found in the short test field section. No different influences are seen in the atmospheric parameters. With the exception of precipitation sensors, they measure at a height of about 4 meters above the ground.
