Algengast er að sjúkdómar í dýrum (og raunar mönnum líka) orsakist af smitum dýra á milli, eða berist í dýrin úr umhverfinu með einhverjum hætti. Sjúkdómar geta borist úr mönnum í dýr (og öfugt) og nefnast þá súnur. Meðal kunnari dýrasjúkdómum eru riða, miltisbrandur, garnaveiki o.fl.. Sökum landfræðilegrar einangrunar hafa ýmsir dýrasjúkdómar ekki borist til landsins. Íslenskir dýrastofnar eru því óvarðir fyrir þessum sjúkdómum þar sem bólusetning fyrir þeim tíðkast ekki.
