Dataset description

The purpose of the network service is to provide direct and guided access to the consultation of information on avalanche problems in mountain areas. Siva is a tool for analysing and consulting cartographic data, alphanumeric data, photographs and associated historical documents, periodically updated in the light of seasonal avalanche events and the retrieval of new data. It brings together all the information and documents concerning the avalanche theme collected since the first years of the establishment of the Nivological Service of the Piedmont Region, now of Arpa Piemonte, for the realisation of the Probable Localisation Cards of the Valanghe (CLPV) and the Cards of the Avalanche Sites (CSV), taken and drawn up on the average scale 1:25,000 with preliminary study of interpretative photos of summer aerial images. The results of a model approach adopted for the drafting of avalanche thematic cartography are also included. The model used is called AFRA and was developed by the University of Pavia a few years ago. It allows demarcation of areas potentially subject to detachment of avalanches. In 2017, the map data collected by the Province of Cuneo according to the traditional methodology were integrated in order to standardise the availability of data, facilitating consultation with a comprehensive territorial vision, also for the prevention of avalanche risk. In 2018, the relevant table data were also included, adapting them to the existing database, thus providing a complete and homogeneous service throughout the region. From the first months of 2019, in order to complete the avalanche maps of the Piedmontese mountain territory over a period of 2 years, a phase of activity was carried out by fruiting what was produced by the municipalities for the drafting of the PRGC, making these areas an adaptation to the methodology adopted for what was already published by making a photointepretative study and a reclassification of the data reported by the plans. This part is now published in the Avalanche Cards section from PRGC source. It is important to remember that the cartography presented here does not provide forecast indications but is a useful knowledge base to carry out the necessary insights depending on the scope in which it is used. The appropriate scale of representation and use of information is 1:25,000 or possibly lower.
