The map, which has been acquired by computer, is a topographical inventory of the regional areas of greatest archaeologic-pathological interest, i.e. those with homogeneous and extended findings for large suburban areas, in areas which are not seriously affected by massive changes in the countryside. There are some 400 areas, comprising 68 areas of archaeological interest subject to ministerial restrictions (Law No 1089 of June 1939) and about twenty areas of archaeological land owned by the State. Produced in 1985 in a preliminary draft as preparatory information material for the implementation of the provisions of Law 431/85 (Galasso Law), was completed in early 1987 and updated to December 1988. The work was extended to the whole of the region, covering 107 of the 160 ‘tables’ on a scale of 1: 25.000 of the topographical map, as only those tables identified areas of archaeological and paesistic interest. The work, mainly of a methodological and classification nature, identifies the basic elements of the regional archaeological landscape and constitutes, in this first stage, a reference grid for the collection of further information and analysis. The basic map of the archaeological landscape stems from the collaboration between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage (Soprintendenza Archeologico dell’Emilia-Romagna).
