Dataset description

The sustainable management of forest resources in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region takes place since the first half of the 20th century through extensive planning activity, which involves the main forest areas of public ownership (municipal, regional or Entity and Consortia forests) and also the most significant privately owned forest areas. Below are some data obtained from the archive of forest management plans updated in 2007.The regional area involved in the forest planning process covers 173.500 ha, managed through 103 forest management plans, for a net wooded area of 119.500 ha. In terms of the total area planned 96.5 % belongs to public bodies while only the remaining 3.5 % involves private property (local consortia, forest consortia, agro-forestry companies) The wood mass present in the planned forests is 20 400 000 m³ with an annual growth of 365.000 m³. The annual usable woody mass, i.e. provided for in the cutting plans of all existing management plans, is 140.000 m³.The average surface area of a wooded parcel is 24.43 ha with a woody mass of 149 m³/ha and an annual increase of 3.05 m³/ha (if the parcel has a predominant function the area is 19.58 ha with 208 m³/ha and an annual increase of 4.36 m³/ha).The forest planning, through the knowledge of the salient characteristics of the forest heritage and the environments in which it grows, identifies the actions and the time needed to achieve a proper management of the woods and therefore, in the best possible way, the supply of goods and services, both for the individual owner and for the whole community: timber production, hydrogeological protection and direct protection of dwellings and infrastructures, harvesting small fruits and mushrooms, recreation and tourism, guarantee of valuable landscapes, purification of air and water, absorption of carbon dioxide, guarantee of habitats for numerous animal and plant species, possibility of hunting, place of teaching and scientific research, etc.
