Dataset description

It is the history of the first geodatabase planting of the type of forest area that covers the regional territory (at that time for more than 255 thousand hectares, about one third of the total). The criteria for defining the types, and therefore also for lower-ranking units (subtypes and variants), are based on ecological, geographical and anthropogenic factors that affect their current composition and their evolution. The main differential factors are: the composition, phytogeographical district, substrate or group of soils; the altitudinal belt; the thermal factor; zonality; dynamism; anthropogenic influence. The basic units of reference are the categories (no.20), the types and subtypes (n.105) and the variants (no.70). The theoretical and scientific support is based and integrates the texts “The forest vegetation and forestry in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region” by R. Del Favero & Others. Udine, 1998 — Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia — Regional Forestry Directorate — Selviculture Service. The database of the Forest Types of Friuli Venezia Giulia was created by the forestry technicians Dr. For. Giuseppe Vanone (mountain area) and Dr. For. Gianfranco Dreossi (hill, submontana and Karst) between 1997 and 1999 as part of the regional project funded by the European Union for the creation of an Observatory and a regional Wood Exchange.
