Dataset description

The theme identifies at regional level sectors vulnerable to landslides by fluidising surface cover. These are landslides that occur during heavy rain events due to saturation and subsequent fluidisation of loose materials constituting surface soils. They are landslides of small size and limited thickness, characterised by extreme rapidity that occur, during the same event, with great diffusion range. A systematic study of gravitative movements produced in surface cover soils during extraordinary rain events (CNR-IRPI of Turin) revealed that there is a correlation between landslides and precipitation heights. Based on the results obtained, through gis calculations with data on slopes, plant cover, soils and isoietes, the most vulnerable areas of this type of failure have been identified. The dataset is part of the Geological Process Databank created in the second half of the 1980s by the Geological, Meteorological and Seismic Risk Prevention Sector of the Piedmont Region (which was then merged into the Harp) to respond to the growing demand for logical and structured information on the territory, necessary for the planning, coordination and direction of territorial-geological choices and interventions. The original thematic data was produced on I.G.M. 1:100,000 cutting by structuring and integrating the data already collected by the CNR-IRPI of Turin in the context of the research aimed at assessing the hazards associated with hydrological events in Piedmont.
