Dataset description

The dataset represents the identification of the lake water bodies of Piedmont within the meaning of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC transposed by Legislative Decree 152/2006. Water bodies are homogeneous lake components from the point of view of geomorphological, hydrological and anthropogenic pressures. The body of water is the unit reference element for monitoring under the Directive. For the Piedmontese territory at the moment there is only one water body to each lake. The product dataset represents a version subject to integrations and modifications. For the identification of water bodies on the lakes, the methodology proposed by the MATTM has been applied, which has been developed by the CNR-IRSA and the CNR-ISE. The methodology foresees for natural and artificial lakes a classification into types based on abiotic descriptors in application of system B of Annex II to the WFD. The typing has been carried out for lakes with area ≥ 0.2 km² and monitoring and subsequent classification are those with area ≥ 0.5 km².The methodology involves the use of the following descriptors: • geographical location: latitude • morphometry: altitude, medium/maximum depth, surface • geology: alkalinity/conductivity, volcanic origin yes/no • chemical-physical: conductivity and thermal stratification. The data required for the population of the various descriptors derives from those reported in the Atlas of Piedmont Lakes developed by the Piedmont Region. The application of the methodology led to the identification of 8 lake types for Piedmont. 37 lakes are typed; among these many are artificial invades.
